There is a very simple reason why Teenage mutant ninja turtles: Out of the shadows is one of the very best Turtles-movies ever made. It features many classic characters from the comic-books and videogames. The movie is literally crammed to the top with delicious humor, delightful action sequences and bad guys we’ve been looking forward to since the first Turtles-movie …
First and foremost, there’s the return of the Shredder. But this time he’s not wearing his mask. He’s not in full gear walking around in his knife-charging body armor.
This time he’s a man of flesh and blood. One of the finest changes of this movie is how the filmmakers decided to show Shredder as a real person … instead of a masked enemy.
To join him in his quest, Shredder calls upon two of the most famous and most legendary side-kicks. Bebop and Rocksteady! They’re stupid, yes, but oh-so enjoyable to watch. We’ve had to wait a long time for them to make a live action appearance – 6 movies in total! – but they’re finally here … and you won’t be disappointed!
The main villain however is not Shredder. And it most certainly isn’t Bebop or Rocksteady. It’s Krang, you know, that creepy-looking pink Octopus monster that hides deep inside the belly of a big metal robot? The CGI-department did a wonderful job bringing this Alien creature to life …
No Whoopi Goldberg in this movie, pity, coz her character was lots of fun. Instead, the filmmakers opted for another great actress. This time it’s Laura Linney – usually an actress found in more serious dramatic roles such as Primal Fear – who picks up the challenge of performing in a big blockbustering CGI-movie.
Naturally April is back too. No need to look for a replacement. Megan Fox did a fine enough job in the previous movie … and she doesn’t change her act all that much. She looks beautiful and does a pretty good job dressing up the movie.
Of course, Teenage mutant ninja turtles: Out of the shadows would be a pretty silly thing without … the Turtles! At first, it was a shock seeing how much our beloved reptile-ninjas had changed, I agree! They looked, well, weird. They looked sorta somewhere between human, turtle and a mutant superhero.
But once you’ve gotten used to the new looks, it ain’t all that bad. In fact, if you think about it, it’s quite impressive work from the Special Effects art department. They gave each Turtle very specific features and facial structures, especially Michelangelo – Mikey for the friends – has a very funny, friendly face.
What makes Teenage mutant ninja turtles: Out of the shadows one of the very best entertaining movies ever made on the Turtles is how everything comes full circle.
Not just about seeing so many classic bad guys, but the fact that we get a front-row seat in what makes the group tick: the brilliant mind of Donatello, the leadership of Leonardo, the physical strength of Raphael … and the amazing athleticism of Michelanglo, especially when he’s skateboarding, then he’s too fast for anyone!
It doesn’t really matter what age you are … this movie is entertainment for everyone involved!
Did you know?
Splinter is designed to have grayer fur and a brown robe in this film, in a homage to appearance in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990).
Give it to me short:
Teenage mutant ninja turtles: Out of the shadows is a movie that has so much to offer! There’s classic bad guys like the Shredder who returns, but now he’s very much human and doesn’t rely on his metallic suit nor insanely large knives. There’s Bebop and Rocksteady who are both very dumb, but also very entertaining to watch. There’s the mighty alien Krang who’s so powerful it seems nobody can touch him. There’s also the return of Casey Jones, the hockey-mask wearing sidekick who secretly has a crush on April.
Apart from the great fun and loads of entertainment this movie has, the filmmakers have also created a very good product on a technical level. The Special Effects – especially how the Turtles were, once again, brought to life or the slimey creature Krang – are all brilliant choices in Special Effects. It’s easy enough to look down on a simple blockbuster movie … but sometimes you have to acknowledge the beauty behind such simplicity.
And Teenage mutant ninja turtles: Out of the shadows may be simple … but it’s as beautiful a blockbuster you’ll see all year long!
