Where to begin, oh, where to begin?
Fantastic beasts and where to find them is the answer to the enormous success of the young wizard with the awesome scar on his forehead, despite looking like an everyday kid in school.
Seven books were written, eight movies came out, and the entire saga was more successful than anything ever made in the history of non-American filmmaking.
Exuberantly overjoyous was the reaction of every single kid on the planet, and every single nerd holding a stick for a weapon when author of the Harry Potter-books decided to add a new chapter to the world of witchcraft and wizardry.
And boy, oh, boy … are we glad she did!
Fantastic beasts and where to find them tells the story of one Newt Scamander who’s some sort of Greenpeace-activist trying to protect the animal kingdom within the fantasy world. The story takes place in 1926 when a British traveler holding a single suitcase arrives in New York. Little does the border police know this man isn’t a normal man … he’s a wizard!
After his arrival in the city that never sleeps, the fundamentally sweet if somewhat shy wizard is thrown back and forth in a whirlwind of adventures, often so far-fetched and imaginative you’re afraid to blink your eyes coz you might miss a part …
Seeing as how this movie is a prequel to the entire Harry Potter-saga, its inevitable comparisons will be made.
Let them, it’s okay.
Fantastic beasts and where to find them can hold its own and even brings many new elements to an already splendiferous feast of a table.
There’s three new things that we never saw in the Harry Potter-saga. Three new things that are displayed in a reveling abundance.
1) The good ole US of A!
First the story takes place in America. Which means: we get to see the other side of the wizard-world. American wizards are slightly different from their original counterparts, both in speech and in general behavior. It’s a magnificent decision from J.K. Rowling to expand the world beyond the borders of Great Britain.
The whole new atmosphere keeps the movie so fresh, you’d almost forget this is the 9th magic-movie made!
2) Animals everywhere!
With a title like Fantastic beasts and where to find them you should not be surprised the movie is packed with more fantastical animals than you can count.
The diversity is mind-blowing! The raving colors of the creatures as well as their hidden powers, the things these animals can do and most importantly: what they actually look like (how many legs they have, can they fly, how big are they, etc … ) all boils down to a wild zoo unlike ANY you’ve ever seen in your life before.
3) School is out!
Despite the raw talent of Harry, the covert cleverness of Ron and the limitless intelligence of Hermione, they never reached their full potential in the saga. We never saw them at the peak of their abilities. Why? They were too young and they still had so much to learn!
This little flaw – perhaps the only flaw in the Harry Potter-saga – has now been officially wiped clean. There’s no more learning students or studying young wizards trying out new spells.
The wizards and witches in Fantastic beasts and where to find them are all very experienced conjurers. We get to see a whole new array of spells we didn’t even know about! We see powers that greatly exceed anything in the former 8 movies. And we see forces that may shake the very foundations of the wizardry world itself.
With these 3 improvements in play, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Fantastic beasts and where to find them is bigger, better and bolder!
Because of this, it’s easily one of the finest fantasy films EVER made … and a close winner to becoming the best movie of the lot (Harry Potter-films 3, 4 & 7 might still get the upperhand).
Furthermore, for those who desire such things, there’s a slice of darkness slivering through the movie, ready to burst out with great anticipation!
She has managed to largely stick to unknown faces and unfamiliar actors – and those that have achieved great success are classic performers with a theatrical background – thus keeping the whole wizardry world very low-profile instead of turning it into a spoofing Hollywood-fest.
Most extraordinarily cast is actor Eddie Redmayne who plays his character to a tee. Here’s a young wizard so bashful you’d think he is magically incompetent, but truth of the matter is: he’s just very shy and seemingly unsure of himself.
The way he positions his body or how he bents his shoulders away when talking to someone, not to mention the flickering of his eyes, afraid to look someone in the face … all these subtle little signs are played with foolproof perfection!
To say more would be to ruin a perfect fantasy movie.
Go and be a child again! Open your heart! Swim and dream away in a movie so beautiful, so magical, so excessively phenomenal … you’ll never want to go back to your own reality.
THIS is what making movies is all about: enter a new world! Enter … tainment!
Did you know?
Was originally intended to be a trilogy, but as of October 2016 it has been confirmed as a 5 part movie series.
Give it to me short:
The absolute brilliance of ‘Fantastic beasts and where to find them’ is how the new chapter beautifully builds onto the already existing world of Harry Potter, despite taking place nearly a 100 years before the British scarfaced golden boy. Not only is the atmosphere entirely different and fresh – New York in the 1920’s – but we are invited to aspects of the wizardry world we didn’t even know were there!
Furthermore, this movie doesn’t deal with struggling students or young wizards and witches experimenting with spells they’ve only just read about in some dusty old book from the local library. No, ‘Fantastic beasts and where to find them’ zooms in onto fully-matured conjurers who have a far more expanded knowledge of magic spells. Because of this, we get to see some of the wildest illusions and most awe-inspiring flicks & tricks.
What really sets this movie apart from anything Harry Potter-related is the epicness of the animal kingdom in the wizardry world. Don’t expect to see any normal beasts – it’s like someone took a sniff of LSD and started drawing crazy creatures.
For the longest of times, we didn’t think we’d ever see a magical movie without Harry Potter … we even believed it wasn’t possible due to the popularity of the character … this new chapter however proves with undying certainty that the world of wizardry and witchcraft has a LOT more to offer!
And – what’s best – the absence of Harry Potter is never felt when watching this modern masterpiece!
