Move over, Pixar!!
Who would’ve thought when the very first X-men movie was released onto the world, this would prove to be the start of an enormous undertaking in the world of Marvel superheroes? It’s almost uncanny how many superheroes found their way to the silver screen. And how many more are preparing their debut, as we speak.
One thing is a given: as long as Marvel (or the production company who makes the Marvel-movie) releases one masterpiece after the other, no movie buff, action junkie or daydreaming teenager is going to issue a complaint.
And if you know that the future holds the gate open for a new X-men movie, Fantastic four and even the return of the worldwide beloved Avengers, then you don’t need the services of a fortune teller to know that Marvel is long but out for the count (in spite of DC Comics only seem to find their way to success with Batman, because – let’s face it! – Superman is a bit of a klutz in the world of cinema).
With Guardians of the Galaxy Marvel does something no person had ever anticipated!
They release a movie about superheroes virtually no one had ever heard of before and they turn it into an amazingly spectacular action movie, one which is already praised into heaven as one of the very best comic-book translations to the silver screen ever!
And why not? When a movie managed to tell a fun tale with interesting characters, why wouldn’t it be able to reach a worldwide audience?
The story of Guardians of the Galaxy is in one word: magnificent!
And the two people responsible for penning the script, deserve a standing ovation. Thank you, James Gunn and Nicole Perlman. These two people made sure this one movie hasn’t got a single dull moment. And more than anything: it is exuberantly funny! And we are not talking about the all-too-common, shallow, typically American underpants humor featuring in too many stupid comedies Hollywood seems to spit out ever so often.
No, Guardians of the Galaxy is rich with comical dialogues sparkling with originality and ingenuity.
In the movie five strange creatures run into each other and decide to stick together when the universe it threatened by one awfully dangerous tyrant. These five are:
* Peter Quill, a young adventurer who puts the ‘self’ into selfish, but has his heart in the right place.
* Gamora, a green-colored alien – and a very pretty lady at that – who was raised as the ultimate fighting machine.
* Drax, a bulky brute who thinks first and asks questions later.
* Rocket, a mutated raccoon who is extremely intelligent and has a rolling tongue that could put Tony Stark to shame.
* Groot, a rather taciturn yet super-friendly walking tree who wouldn’t hurt a fly until pressed for anger. Also, his speech is reduced to three words … always in the same order too!
What’s really impressive about the movie is that it knows how to take its time. Not only to introduce these five strange beings to the outside world, but also contemplating that there is a story that needs to be told. One could even go so far as to say that this movie isn’t all that different from – let’s say – Star Wars, because pretty much everything you see takes place in space or on some god-forsaken alien planet.
As expected, the movie is a visual delicacy when seeing so many new things. You really have to peel your eyes, because more often than not, you’ll see a handful of extraordinary creatures running around.
Color is also of importance in this movie. After all, the team of superheroes is comprised of a bunch of blue-headed aliens, a purple hammer, a green woman, a dark red beefcake and a prison crammed with deadly criminals in yellow uniforms.
As it goes with action movies, there is loads of action floating around! Director James Gunn makes his movie as if it’s based on real events! And he does with an undying passion that glitters of the silver screen. The cinematography may not be the best, but the professionalism with which he allows one action sequence to flow into the next, is something everyone will enjoy to the fullest!
Chris Pratt, who fills the shoes of Peter Quill or Star-Lord, is sometimes compared to a young Harrison Ford. This analogy might seem odd at first, but not quite so if you think about it. Both actors had their breakthrough at the age of thirty-five.
Harrison Ford became an overnight sensation in the super-successful Star Wars, Chris Pratt enjoys world fame as a result of Guardians of the Galaxy. Also, both movies mentioned are in the science-fiction/fantasy-genre. And you could even argue that both actors look a little alike, wouldn’t you say?
The only woman present in the team has no problems to hold her own. The ever-so-beautiful Zoe Saldana already played an alien in Avatar (but a blue one) and changed color now. She does a truly remarkable job, so much so in fact that you’d never guess this was the same woman who starred in the – currently – most successful movie of all time!
Here’s another fun fact for you: Vin Diesel provides the heavy voice for big tree Groot and Bradley Cooper brings the talkative raccoon to life. Both actors completely disappear into their roles, leaving only their respectable voices to be heard.
Last but not least, you might also recognize class-actor Michael Rooker in the role of the arrow-whistling sniper (you’d have to watch the movie to completely understand this equation). As always, the man is a joy to watch!
Give it to me straight:
Guardians of the galaxy is a heck of a lot more than just another chapter of Marvel’s magical superhero-book. It is an irrefutable evidence that the factory where Iron Man, Thor and Captain America were designed is at full force!
The movie is a super-spectacular visual treat that supersedes any predicaments that movies with previously unknown superheroes cannot reach worldwide fame and success. The action is brilliant all the way through, presented in such a glamorous way without overdoing it, a flaw that’s all too common with today’s action movies. The special effects are of the highest order, although they hardly break any new ground. And the characters – aaah, the characters! – if there is one thing Guardians of the galaxy can be immensely proud of, it’s the characters that form the alien team fighting their way through justice in space and on strange planets!
Not only are the big five characters that you can easily identify with – and seeing as how one of these characters is a tree and the other one is a talking raccoon, that is quite an achievement – but the bad guys in this movie are also much more than your usual one-dimensional evil-doers. They walk around breaking stuff, killing people and what’s not, but they all do it with reason and a clear-cut path of logical understanding. And these things help build a character.
Give it to me short:
Guardians of the galaxy is a true masterpiece and deserves all the praise it gets! There aren’t many comic-book movies out there for the neutral cinema-visitor, but this one right here … this goes into the history books as one of the funniest, most awesome action movies ever made!
